I am singled out and separated
Steffani Jemison and Szu-Han Ho
2008
Dimensions variable
Five-channel sound installation; wood sculpture (two pieces); unlimited edition print (11”x17”)
The piece takes the form of “call and response” choral music found in African-American churches, in which the choir responds to each other and to the cues of the choir director. The lyrics are excerpted from a passage in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, in which the protagonist is alternately disillusioned by his loss yet convinced of the possibility of redemption. Created with the choir at Oakdale Covenant Church, where my grandfather served as pastor for many years.
